It feels like a cliche every year, but where has the time gone? We are now rocketing towards 2025, and in December you can expect from this blog some business Christmas wishes and a look back on our most popular posts of the year.

But today, let’s look back on 2024 and some of the technological trends we’ve seen come up and get established over the last 12 months.
This isn’t a comprehensive list, but if you’ve been near a computer this year (and really who hasn’t?) these will likely be familiar to you.

2024 has been the year of AI

It’s hard to argue that AI hasn’t been important this year. The rise of ChatGBT has moved this tech concept from something out a science fiction film and into reality.
Whilst we aren’t quite in the world of sentient robots and self driving cars, AI tools are starting to change the way we work with jobs like reading, refining and summarising large volumes of text.
You will probably have recognised this already from Google starting to include summaries of answers at the top of search results.

Online safety

In the UK at the end of 2023 the online safety bill became law, and now it is starting to come into force. The law imposes obligations on nearly 100,000 services. The most significant obligations around harmful and illegal content are now starting to apply.
Additionally, a large number of elections across the globe in 2024 has increased the amount of disinformation online. This has also included a spike in the amount of deep fakes around – something we wrote about previously.

Cyber security remains important

One thing we’ve seen a fair amount of this year is data breachs and hacking of large organisations. This should be a reminder of how important it is to ensure that you have good security protocols in place – which includes regular password changes, up to date software and antivirus.
This advice has probably become a bit of a cliche on this blog, but it’s a cliche for a reason. Making sure that you have good security hygiene is important for your business but also gives great confidence to the customers you serve. Whilst this isn’t a new trend, it’s an important classic to keep in mind.
