It’s that spooky time of year again. Last year we wrote about some of biggest IT scares that you can experience.
Thinking again on this, there are even more things about IT that can cause a scare than we wrote about previously. So this was an excellent opportunity to discuss a bit more of what can be a scary experience in the workplace and how to tackle these challenges.
Most importantly we are thinking about how to avoid or fix these challenges when they arise. Let’s dive into it.
The blue screen of death
Nothing feels worse than when your computer presents you with the blue screen of death. Especially if you have been working on projects that are unsaved when the crash occurs. Often this can result in a lot of hard work needing to be redone.
These sorts of crashes happen when the operating system reaches a point that it can no longer work safely. This results in a systems failure which usually means having to reboot the machine you’re working on.
How can you try to avoid it happening to you? Good computer hygiene is the way to do it. Ensure that updates are regularly installed to keep things running smoothly. Also make sure your machine is in good order – keeping dirt and grime out of the vents in particular.
Data Breaches
We have noted many time before that data is the life blood of small businesses and it is an important responsibility to use and protect data responsibly. A data breach can result in an issue not just for your data but any data you hold on behalf of customers.
Data Breaches can happen for a multitude of reasons, from poor staff training resulting in human error, all the way through to data being stolen in a hacking or malware attack.
The best ways to avoid these scenarios is to ensure that security updates are being installed, including anti virus software. It’s also sensible to encourage staff to do some training on keeping data and your wider digital workspace safe and secure.
A lost or stolen device
With so much work being done on portable devices – laptops and phones predominantly, a lost or stolen device is a real risk. This can happen anywhere but is most common when travelling or commuting.
It is difficult to prepare people to stop having their devices stolen – but good situational awareness will help.
Luckily there are things that can be done to ensure that any devices lost or stolen don’t create undue issues. Ensuring your data is backed up to the cloud is an important starting point. Equally important is ensure that you have the option to lock or delete data from a device remotely should it become compromised. Helpfully, this is now a reasonably common feature on many products.
