Learning isn’t just for school children. There are plenty of good reasons to keep focused on learning and developing skills throughout life. Whilst this is the time of year for heading back to school or university, it’s also an excellent time to think about training you can get involved in for your business.
Now the training that makes the most sense to do will differ person to person and business to business – however, there is a good selection to choose from for any small business owner.
Today we’re thinking about the sorts of lessons to learn for a small business in September. Let’s dive in.
Leadership and management
When we end up running and growing a business it can sometimes happen by accident and we don’t realise that we have stumbled into leadership and management. Many of the business owners we meet are really skilled practitioners of their area of expertise and never really intended to become managers.
Management and leadership is a skill set all of their own, and if it’s something you’ve stumbled into then it’s well worth taking the time to upskill yourself. Luckily there is plenty of stuff readily available from small business focused organisations, for both this and the next subject.
Finances
Unless you’re an accountant by trade you might not have had much experience with finance prior to running a business. If this is the case then some training on finance really wouldn’t go amiss.
A good cash flow is the life blood of a business and making sure you know what’s coming in and going out is a vital part of that. As with leadership and management, this is a job that can be thrust upon you as a business owner, but it’s well worth taking the time to ensure you feel up to speed.
Systems and processes
You will have read before on this blog about the benefits of putting systems and processes in place. As with the above areas to focus on, it’s not a given that you will be a natural at setting up systems and processes.
However, having those systems in place will streamline your business and make things like finances and management all the easier. Look for training on data management and writing business processes and you will thank yourself in the long run.
