In our last blog we spoke about some of the things that a small business can do if you’re starting to take advantage of a slightly slower summer.
One of the things suggested within that blog was spending some time on CPD. Now, that doesn’t have to involve sitting in a stuffy classroom in the middle of July or August. Thankfully, there are plenty of routes to boost your learning in multiple ways – seminars and courses being just one route.
Another great thing to focus on is your reading. There are more and more business books published every year. Today we’ve selected a few favourites to suggest as a possible starting point to get your small business owner juices flowing.
The $100 Startup: Fire Your Boss, Do What You Love and Work Better To Live More – Chris Guillebeau
We’ve included this read for two reasons. The first being that it is absolutely jam packed with some inspirational stories of people starting fascinating businesses and the reasons for them choosing to do that. The second being a pertinent reminder that business doesn’t have to be big and complex and need massive loans to start. If you’ve got an idea you want to test out, this book will inspire you to take action.
Will It Fly? How to Test Your Next Business Idea So You Don’t Waste Your Time and Money – Pat Flynn
If you were inspired by the last book to test out a new business idea, it’s well worth reading this book from Pat Flynn. This gives a step-by-step guide through getting your business idea from conception all the way to a viable business. It has particularly got some great things to say about making sure your business matches your personal values and ensuring you don’t waste money on the things that don’t matter.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change – Stephen R. Covey
This book is a classic and has been on small business reading lists since it was first published in 1989. It gives a powerful and often practical run down of the habits you should be cultivating to ensure that you are building on your success day by day. If you’re getting fogged up about what you should be focusing on in your business, this might be a particularly powerful read.
The Power Of Habit: Why We Do What We Do, and How To Change – Charles Duhigg
Paired with the above book this can be particularly powerful. In his book, Charles Duhigg focuses on the things that you need to do to build habits. Successful habits compound. If you’ve ever had any challenges around making the things you want to do stick, this is worth looking at.
The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon – Brad Stone
This is less of a practical book than the others listed above, however, it remains one that is incredibly inspirational. Brad Stone charts the history of online juggernaut Amazon, from Jeff Bezos’ garage when people were using doors for desks, all the way to being the corporate giant it is today. Some of the anecdotes told in this book are fascinating, and whilst (as said) it isn’t a practical book to follow, you should come away from it amazed at the success Amazon has enjoyed.
