Many of us will be heading back to the office this week after taking a break over summer. Even if you’ve not had a big break, or a break at all, September can have a real back to school feel. Even if it’s not school you’re heading back to.
We’ve
written before about why September is a surprisingly good time to do some spring cleaning (even though it’s in Autumn). I’ve you’ve missed that then check it out here.
Today we’re focusing on more of the practicalities. How can you spend some time this week working on the things that will help you to make the most of 2024 for your business, and set you up for a great start to 2025?
A tidy space is a tidy mind.
You will probably have heard before that a tidy space is a tidy mind. There is definitely some truth to it. It can be incredibly difficult to get into deep work when surrounded by mess, even if that is just on your desk top (physical or digital).
If you’re coming back to work, do yourself a favour and spend some time to clear the decks before you get stuck into any big projects. Make sure the space your working in is tidy and as much as possible your computer files are organised. It will set you up for more efficient work once you get started.
File, organise and back up your data
As alluded to above, tidying should extend from your physical work space to your virtual one. For some reason or another, big work projects can get underway in the Autumn so now is as good a time as any to get your computer systems in order.
This basically means making sure that all your files are in the right place and correctly named. It can take the best part of an afternoon but it will put you in a more organised space.
Secondly take the time to back up your files in case they get lost. If you’re using an operating system like Office 365, simply saving in the right place will do this for you.
Take stock
For many businesses September is a great time of year to take stock. For many it’s the middle of the financial year, so is a good opportunity to understand what’s going on.
Some questions you might want to ask yourself (once you’ve worked through getting a clear desk), are –
How has the year gone so far?
What do you need to focus on next?
What do you need to organise and get in place to achieve those goals?
