Today we heard August being described as the Sunday of summer. Whilst that does on the surface of it sound odd, it does ring true. August is an excellent month to rest and recuperate before taking on the rest of the year – much as you would use a Sunday to rest up for a busy week ahead.
What better to do on the Sunday of summer than to relax with a book? We’ve prepared a run down of a bunch of recommend reading for the small business owner. You won’t find any light fiction here (but please do read that if you want to properly switch off!). Below are a selection of reads that will hopefully provide you with plenty of ideas to implement in your business come September.
Hopefully many of you are already on, or planning some time off or a holiday. If you have a bit of downtime coming up, why not grab a copy of one of these books to read by the pool?
Rebel Ideas – Matthew Syed
It’s possible you may have come across Matthew Syed if you’re a sports fan. A previous international ping pong player, he also co hosted a show on Radio 5 live with Freddie Flintoff and Robbie Savage.
His book Rebel Ideas is really about the celebration of thinking diversely (and that diversity is not just about the surface level things that make us different). If you find that your team stuck trying to solve problems in the same way this might be the book for you.
Atomic Habits – James Clear
This next choice has been a big best seller and you will undoubtedly run into it if you happen to stumble into an airport bookshop if you are flying this summer.
This book differs from the general approach to self help and self improvement, moving from the broad motivation to setting out how to start building change may making very small but consequential decisions in your day to day life.
Deep work – Cal Newport
Next up is a pick for anyone who finds themselves easily distracted. Frankly, with the amount of different devices and apps that try to pull on our time- who isn’t distracted these days?
The state of deep work is about setting yourself up in a way that eradicates distractions and allows you to deeply focus on the work at hand. Taking this approach is said to greatly improve your cognitive ability.
All Marketers are Liars – Seth Godin
Anyone with any interest in business and marketing will have likely heard of Seth Godin by now. He’s a big name. And whilst this title is provocative, there is certainly some truth to it.
If you want to think move about how you engage with your customers, this is a great starting point. Godin explains in the book why people are turned off by sales pitches and that a more effective way to build sales and business in the long term is with authenticity.
Start with why – Simon Sinek
And finally a pick that isn’t just for business owners but for all leaders. If you’re looking to inspire the people around you and get the best out of them this is the book to pick.
Sinek sets out a naturally occurring framework of thinking and communicating that will help you to inspire the people around you and encourage them to feel more invested in the work they do.
None of these take your fancy? We’ve done a run down of summer reading before which you can check out
