Even for those readers who are less observant, you may have seen that the world has become a lot more turbulent. It’s obviously far too soon (and would be ill advised) to predict what I’d going to happen next – however there are plenty of things that you can do that will help to protect your business from rough seas.

Today we are sharing some thoughts on things you can do in your business that can protect you from rougher seas. Whilst none of this is a catch all to protect you wholesale from the worst, all of these are good rules of thumb to follow when times get tough.

Let’s dive in.

Think about the products and services that your business offers. What do you do well? What is your unique selling point that makes you different to your competitors? In turbulent times its advisable to double down on what you’re good at and what sets you apart – and most of all making sure that you’re doing it really, really well.

Take some time to collate your thoughts on what your business is doing – and consider if this is something worth continuing or if it could be streamlined. This extends to other tasks like accountancy and IT that can take you away from what you’re expert in. If possible you’ll want to think about how that can be outsourced.

This may sound counter intuitive having just spoken about getting back to basics, but this shouldn’t mean that you stop looking for opportunities as part of your business development. It’s a well worn cliche that more millionaires are made in recessions than upturns. But it is true.

The reason for it is that difficult circumstances lead to people thinking outside of the box. That type of thinking can lead to creative solutions that can become a new profitable opportunity or additional service that you can offer.

These opportunities will not just fall in your lap – be on the look out for them and be willing to adapt if needed.

Now protection can take many forms. It can include financial protection, so making sure that your liabilities are covered, as well as the more conventional IT protection and security you would expect us to talk about.

Whilst you expect that looking after yourself financially would come up as an important thing to so in turbulent time – the same is true of your IT security. It only takes a small breach to become a big issue, that could be costly to fix or in the worst case lose you customers.
