If there is one thing to take seriously in your business then it is the security of the information and data that you have available to you. Whether the information held is your own or data provided to you by clients, this is vital stuff to help us get our work done.
What should you be doing to keep things safe and secure in your business? That is what we’re exploring this week in our blog.
Let’s dive in.
The first a most basic of security steps that you can take for your business is to ensure that you are updating the passwords that you use regularly. A report from Forbes last year said that 78% of people use the same password for more than one account. That is a simply staggering number and the likelihood is if you’re reading this blog then it’s true for you.
If you are guilty of this then it’s worth putting some reminders in your calendar to update your passwords periodically – as one password compromised could result in a lot of accounts compromised if you’re using the same one over and over again. The alternative option is to look at using a password manager, which could keep multiple accounts safe at one time (and then only have one password to remember to update).
Schedule updates to antivirus and malware protection
A second thing that is important but often falls by the wayside is putting the time in to schedule updates to your antivirus and malware protection.
It’s quite possible that you’ve gone to the trouble of installing these programs to your machines but then considered that to be job done. Malware is constantly envolving as so too is the protection from it.
Make sure you are blocking out the time to protect your business adequately.
Security training and development
An underrated improvement that you can take to security in your business is to invest in training and development around security for your team members.
Good security practices and proceedures are the responsibility of everyone in an organisation. It only takes one weak point to be exploited for all of the data and information that you hold to become vulnerable.
There are helpfully now plenty of different training options available that you can look into – either shorter online courses or more in depth in person session. Have a look and pick something that will be suit your business. But most importantly, get it booked in.
Discuss with experts how your IT security can improve
The fact of the matter is that for most businesses, IT is a necessity for getting work done but they are not expert in it. As we have discussed above any sort of security breach for your business will have a significant impact on your ability to get work done. If you have blind spots around the type of security measures that need to be put in place then it’s well worth taking the time to discuss with experts how some of those knowledge gaps can be filled.
